LET BYGONE BE BYGONE

There is an incident that triggers me to write on this theme: Let bygone be bygone. After a month plus living in this city, I finally came to know that actually there are lots of “things” happened here among the M community, some of which are good but some are really... As a newcomer, I did not expect that I need to know much about it. What more important is that, what has happened, has happened. That is it. None of us can turn the clock back to the past. That event is already happened. It is a past. Thus, no matter how bad it is, I do not think that anyone of us (including me) should feel sensitive about it. Instead, we should look and think about it positively for the purpose to learn from the mistake and perhaps to be a better person. There is no use to keep the hatred in our heart. It is a total useless to condemn people about the mistake he/she had done in the past. Let bygone be bygone. Why can’t we be forgiving to each other? Forget the past, and let’s start a new episode. Isn’t it more beautiful to live peacefully and harmony without keeping any hatred or jealousy or negative perception towards other? We know that nobody’s perfect so why do we expect that someone should not make a mistake. Everyone makes mistake in life. But you see, Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Benevolent, always listens to our prayers, and always forgive our sins or wrongdoing. Who are we if we’re not able to forgive people?? Let us now forget the past, learn to forgive and forget. Open our heart to accept if someone were to change to become good. Try to give a chance. Throw away all the egoism since it never gives any benefit at all. Be honest to yourself and to others as well. Be good to people and you will see that many people appreciate you for your kindness. It is so simple yet it is hard to implement one if we keep that hatred in our heart. Take the first step which is purifying our heart to see the truth and to seek only the truth.

Jazakumullah…

To think positively, to see the good thing

In our daily life, we always encounter with various type of people with different characteristics. Some of which, we like to be with but some may be we hate it at all. I have a friend who always reminds me that we should always see the good thing in people even though we don’t like the person. Sounds weird isn’t it because we tend to avoid someone whom we categorize as “not-doing-good” type of person.

It intrigues me to think deeply why my friend said so. I even asked her, how to do that? How to teach ourselves to see the good thing in people? She said, no matter what happened we must always try to take things positively. Accept any criticism with an open heart, an open mind. “Tidak ada yang tak berguna dalam setiap ciptaanNya..” she added as simple as that. Thus, no matter how crook or bad the person is, there must be something in him/her which eventually will return good thing to us. Just believe that. “..tidaklah sesuatu itu dijadikan sia-sia..”. To always think positive towards others is not easy or simple as what some people might think. Even if it is hard, try to have that features built-in in our soul. If we see good thing in people, we will realize that others will see the entire good thing in us, in ourselves. After all we are all human being, we live in this world, perhaps until 60 or 70 years or perhaps reaching 100 if you’re lucky. But we will never ever young forever. There will be a moment, where the angel name Izrail comes and when the time comes, we will realize that, that is the end of our life. What’s next? Our next life will be determined based on what we have done in this little tiny world. It is all up to us.

p/s: I wrote this as a reminder for me too.

Meta-analysis: Anyone knows this??

I came across this term when I studied the SR. So far, Alhamdulillah I think I able to grasp some of the concept in performing the SR though very little, it does useful for initial write up on protocol. Firstly, after getting thru the review questions, we will have to plan for searching appropriate sources. So we will derive few search strategies to be used later on. Upon retrieval of all the primary and secondary sources, next is we will have to do screening on those sources on its validity. The reliability of any source will be based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria being set up earlier. After the final selection process, now it comes to the major part of reviewing; which is to critically appraise those studies. This is the hard part. To summarize, to identify, to figure out limitations and to suggest gaps in the studies is vital to determine what should be done next. Some of the review is using the meta-analysis in carrying out the evaluation part. But some author said it is not necessarily so. There are times when meta-analysis could not be carried out. But in what sense? Huhuh.. I have no idea how is it being doneL. What is needed and what not. Any ideas??

I have a meeting with my supervisor tomorrow morning. So far I have no idea what to report. Huhu.. I guess it will be discussion on the timeframe and the workflow I submitted last week. I need her feedback on the realistic schedule that I should follow.

Wish me luck!

Reading Vs Programming

Why reading is sometimes bored? Why we can read all the entertainment magazines for hours but to read a single 3-4 page of an article, it is really difficult to sustain our eyes on those lines? Why? Y?

I think let me put it this way: Reading magazines is considered a light-weight process and does not need any highly mental abilities to understand. In contrast, reading an article especially from referred journal, need you to be highly focus and articulate the statements used by the author. You are using your mind to perform intellectual judgments towards any claims made by the author(s). hai meh..?? Did you agree??

Or may be you had any other opinion on this? Isn’t it that we were taught to read critically on the article so that we do not simply agree with the idea of the author?

Well, take a look now at programming activities. I personally love to program or debug program rather than reading journals. Programming is something which I really feel passionate about it. May be that is why I am doing Pair Programming for my PhD! Thanks to my supervisor for giving me the topic J

The issue here is, why our students (I think majority) are not happy with programming courses? Despite of the difficulties to grab certain programming concept, the whole idea is that to program is also means to be able to solve a problem. I found that it really gives me true satisfaction when you able to write the code and execute it successfully. I think, the most critical personality traits needed for programmers are to be highly logical and analytical. Without the ability to think logically, one will never able to figure out the solution. Thus, how to built-in those characters among our students? What are the ways? That is basically what I’m going to study. One of the ways is through the practice of pair programming which has been popularized by the agile industries. It has been used widely according to the Extreme Programming methodology several years ago. I will write more about this in future.. insyaAllah. There are so many to write about it right now, let me KIV first the topic.

K Yati, all the best for the Marama Project.. I have the confidence that you can solve that Critics Design issues. Don’t hesitate to discuss it together ok? I think it can be simplified a lot, just that we don’t get the whole picture yet. InsyaAllah, boleh.. J Coming up with the complete version of class diagram hopefully will assist us in understanding the underlying interfaces and classes involved. Don’t worry much about the “rainbow”..It’s only a temporary threat not a daemon process..heheh

Have heard this wording..? “In the middle of difficulties, lies opportunity…”J

There must be an opportunity which we didn’t even know about it. One thing we knew, you will fly to US soon to present your paper..! Ain’t that great opportunity? Yeah definitely!!! So there you are..!!

It's almost a Month

Another few more days, its almost a month Im staying here in the city of Auckland. So far, Alhamdulillah things was going rather fine. Meet more friends. Know new friends. Of course, getting closer with my supervisor, Dr Emilia Mendes :) Alhamdulillah 33x, thats what I should and always want to say..All praise to Allah..
This week, not much progress on my work. Dunno why I feel sometimes quite boring to read on SR. Anyways, at least I have completed the schedule ie timeframe for the SR process and the flowchart. Having email those stuffs to my sup. she wanted to have a meeting on this monday. Huhuh I am actually not ready for the meeting. Yesterday, I did not come to office. Instead, I just stayed at apt, waiting for the cleaner and in the afternoon, Syaf n me went out to Nandos (hehe suppose aku yg nakbanjer dia, but then Syaf plak yg bayor..huhuh.. next nandos aku plak mate!). After having our lunch, we went to see boats nearby the Albert rd./downtown. Here r some pics:

We went back around 3.30pm and this time taking free bus. hehe i love it!

So far, I should say I am well adjusted to the living here..Its not that complicated and here everyone is mind on their own business. My routine, morning normally I studied at apt, went to office normally after zuhr prayer. If there;s any courses or meeting, then usually I'll come to office early in the morning.
Eating-wise, not a big problem at all. I usually cook hehe klu rajin almost everyday masak..jimat beb.. if beli, sekali sekala ok..after all it depends..depends on ($$$ || time || mood) ehehe

ok more to write next time :)

My supervisor & the Systematic Review

I have met my supervisor several times, Alhamdulillah I think my prayer was answered by Allah SWT. Alhamdulillah 33x. I found that she is a very kind lady, soft spoken and highly concern about her students. I should grab this opportunity to prove that I can be a good student and able to progress positively towards the PhD. Ameen.

During the second meeting with my supervisor, we discuss a lot about conducting systematic review (SR). She had written several papers together with Barbara Kitchenhem (from Keele University) especially on applying the SR technique in Software Engineering (SE). She also gave me a book title “Systematic Review to support evidence-based medicine” so that I can refer to how was the SR being used in medicine.

SR is new to me. I have neither heard about it nor even apply it before, so now it is my job to dig in depth about how it can be used to assist me in conducting my literature review systematically. If anybody knows about it, please advice me accordingly. Tq! What I understand from my reading was that SR is conducted as an alternative to the traditional review. We are living in the information society and certainly in our life, there are times where we had to make important decision. As decision maker, definitely you will never have the time to read all those thousands or perhaps millions of article just to understand or grab a little piece of knowledge about something in order to make that correct decision. SR will help you with that. It provides means or mechanism to extract, appraise critically on those related evidence without bias. That’s the key point – No biasness. In regard to the traditional review (this is what we do all the while), authors (including me) tend to write something more or less related to our personal interest. If we tend to agree on something though the fact is it was not that true, then we are giving false information to those who read our paper. Obviously that should not be happened!

SR, on the other hand helps us in deciding and appraising those primary studies as well as reproducing the result. Now, the morale of the story is, “if you want to do something, some where, do it systematically..” Hehe.. J)

Sounds like I got the tune of it hehe J

That’s only very little that I know…help me please………….!! I am now trying hard to write up the protocol for the SR. I still don’t know how to go about it.. O Allah please give me the guidance. Ameen..

Dua and intention for studying

“All praise to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. And salutations and greetings upon our Master Muhammad SAW and upon his family and companions.

I intend to study and teach, take and give a reminder, take and give benefit, take and give advantage, to encourage the holding fast to the book of Allah and the way of His messenger, and calling to guidance and directing towards good hoping for the countenance of Allah and His pleasure, proximity and reward, transcendent is He.”

Please pass this on to your friends, also as a reminder for me too. Since we are accountable in everything that we do, thus hopefully with the right niyah or intention, insyaAllah it will not mislead us in doing something incorrectly. Our life is always being tested every moment, every single second. Therefore, we must always remember that we’re being observed and will be asked later in the hereafter. I wish that we will be in the Jannah together with those righteous people and of course with our beloved parents, family and friends live happily ever after. Living in this world, is definitely too short to worry about so many things. May Allah SWT give us His guidance, strength and His Rahmah, ameen.

Farah, All the best for your viva

I learnt the dua from my friend, farah who is currently waiting for her PhD Viva at Strathclyde University which will be on 11th July 2007. Let us pray to Allah SWT, may Allah SWT makes it easy for her. Ameen.
