The strategy in making a paper looks good to the reviewer(s)
Here are some writing strategies that I would like to share with my friends and readers of this blog. These are perhaps more relevant to a paper of empirical content, but I guess these are somewhat general to be applicable in other domains.
1) Before you start writing, read a lot of studies in your research area as well as other related areas. This will give you good grasps in the topic and it is also important that your reading cover as much related areas as possible.
2) Write, write and write. Practice makes perfect! Think about what your paper is all about. Focus your thinking on the purpose of the paper, and then organize your writing into relevant Sections. Typical Sections for writing up an empirical paper are as follows:
Section 1: Introduction
Section 2: Motivation and Related Work
Section 3: Methods
Section 4: Results
Section 5: Discussion
Section 6: Conclusions and Future Work
I usually start writing on the motivation and the related work Section. It’s because I would like to start my writing with a review of previous work and how those studies related to the present study. The missing part should be highlighted and therefore our work is expected to fulfill the gap. That serves as a motivation to our study. An excellent review usually gives a clear picture of where our work fits in the problem domain and a brief explanation of how we are going to tackle the issue/problem.
Upon completion of the Related work, I usually continue with explaining the setting of the study (e.g. hypotheses, procedures/methods, research design etc). This is a pretty straightforward Section where we should describe clearly the research methodology we used in our study (e.g. explain the formulation of hypotheses, the instruments used (if any), the samples, the procedures, and the type of analysis employed).
In the Results Section, we should report the results or findings obtained from our analysis. There are many styles one can use in reporting results. For empirical studies, we can describe the demographics data (or subject we used in the study); results of correlation of variables (to show relationships among variables); describe the distribution of data; results of statistical analysis and whether or not they support our hypothesis. (Note to remember: do not intertwine results with interpretation or our own speculation. The Results Section is the part where we should report our findings and left the interpretation in the Discussion Section).
The discussion Section is the part where you provide justification of the results. This is the hardest and the most important Section where you should interpret your findings (i.e. why the result is such and such, why, why, why???). A well articulated paper usually consists of a clear interpretation of results and makes a connection with existing evidence/literature (if available and applicable). A good discussion usually gives a clear justification of the findings and then leads to recommendation for future work.
Next, write up the remaining Sections: Introduction, Conclusions and the abstract.
Don’t forget to highlight the contribution(s) in the Introduction Section, so the reviewers can see the intention of our work. Introduction should not be too long; it should be precise enough to describe the aim of the study, the importance of the research and brief background of the work). The Conclusions Section is where you conclude the work (as its name implies), so highlight the major findings here. Do not put any new idea in the Conclusion as this is the part where we sum up the whole work and put our flags on the future work.
p/s: Organization of ideas is very important so that you are able to deliver your writing in a consistent, and coherent manner. What the reviewers expect from a paper is a piece of work that is written clearly (or concise), and justifiable in all aspects. I remember my colleague in KICT (Dr Shariza) once said “any research lend itself to a publication if it is written clearly”. I completely agreed with her statement.
3) Ask your supervisor(s) to read and review your paper. Usually when I complete a write up, I will immediately email my supervisors and ask for their feedback/comments. The more feedback you gain the better. It helps improve your writing because other people might be able to see something that you might have overlooked. For those studying in the Univ. of Auckland, the Student Learning Center (SLC) provides a DEAL support group that can help us in proof reading the paper. 4) Never take comments personally. Remember that the reviewers are criticizing the work, not criticizing about you. For beginner, it can be hard to receive harsh comments (which I do experienced when I submitted my first paper to an international conference two years ago) but I admit that I have learned a lot from the reviewers’ comments. Looking at the bright side, they taught me that I should avoid from repeating the same mistakes, and making me more conscious in every single piece of thought that I want to convey in a paper. Yes, it takes a while to realize and understand that, but trust me, every clouds has its silverlining. So, never give up.
5) Use thesaurus a lot. Otherwise, do google or refer to the British National Corpus and check out whether or not the prepositions/grammar we used makes sense. If something does not make sense, we should feel weird about it. Don’t you think so? So, make sure you have lots of common sense. Ha ha...:-)).
6) Oh yeah, finally (last but not least), make sure you provide a proper justification and appropriate reference(s) in every single claims you made in the paper. Never let the reviewers struggling reading your paper, so, always try to justify things clearly and wherever possible and applicable relate your findings with findings from existing studies.

No, I am not terror or terrorist in writing up a paper (heehe..I am just happy to share the knowledge I gained from my own experience in writing up papers during my PhD studies. I really hope my friends can benefit from this experience. Morale of the story is: Never give up! Never Quit! When the road ahead seems more complicated, never quit, but stay persistent and keep moving. Also, never forget to make a lot (A LOT – I do mean it) a lot of prayers. End of holidays – back to the reality of life & happy new year all!
I have no choice but to stay and to do work at home to avoid exposure to the sun. It was quite annoying dealing with the sunburn after getting back from holidays at Northland. I have visited Northland couple of times before this but failed in our attempt to drive to the

I went to Disneyland!!
Last month, I had the chance to present my work at the ESEM09 conference (Empirical Software Engineering & Measurement) which was held between 13th - 16th Oct. at the Lake Buena Vista, Florida. That was my first visit to the States, so obviously I felt so excited and nervous at the same time especially when thinknig about presenting my papers in front of other peers and the experts. But Alhamdulillah, everything went well. Thanks to my family members, and my dear friends for making dua.
The trip was a very long one! The flight departed from Auckland at 10.30pm and reached LA after 12 hours. Then, I have to wait for the next flight to Washington (another 6 hours in a plane), on the next day, I took another flight from Washington direct to Orlando. I was surprised that the weather there was almost exactly like the weather in my home country. huhu...panas lor....!. Finally, I reached the conference venue at the Hilton Walt Disney Hotel, at Disney Downtown. I was sooo tired, plus jet-lag. But then I had a good sleep at the hotel :-D
The next day, I joined the Doctoral Symposium. I highly recommend those who are still newbie in your PhD research to participate in this kind of event (altho I am not considered newbie but my sup. asked me to send my work, so kena present lor..)During the doctoral symposium, you'll be assigned with an advisor who will give a very critical feedback on your work, and it also gives you experience in defending your research. Supervisor is not allowed to speak or to defend on behalf of students. Panels will ask you lots of questions and they would like to know how are you going to tackle those questions in your research. The good thing is, it gives you something to ponder or to think about, and students also encourage not to take the comments personally. After all, their advices are important, and that's what we want to learn, aye? Alhamdulillah, I was lucky enough that the panels are happy with my presentation and agreed with the contribution and remaining work that I suppose to do. Yea, I was soo relief... definitely all praise is due to HIM.
On Thursday, 15th Oct I attended the ESEM opening ceremony. The keynote address was given by Fred Brooks, the author of the famous book "The Mythical Man-Month". After the opening, my supervisor introduced me to her ring of research mates, and advisors. What a lucky day! I've been longing to meet some of these famous people like Prof Barbara Kitchenham, and few others :-D So, I really feel like meeting superstars, hahaa.. its because all these while I have been reading, and citing lots of their work, and suddenly I met them in person!! How wonderful...!
On Friday morning, 16th Oct. I finally presented our full referred paper to the conference. I was sooo gabra initially but Alhamdulillah after went up to the stage, all the butterflies gone! magic betul. Lega tak terkire rasanya lepas present tu! Happy lor.. :-D
Another exciting moment was the time we spent at the Disney Magic Kingdom. Below are some of our photos:
To go to Magic Kingdom we can use either monorail or ferry boat. We picked up the fastest one :)

Overall, it was really a great conference and I think Florida is a great place to be visited - If you have kids, they will definitely enjoy! I don;t get the chance to visit other theme park, I've heard people recommend to visit the Animal Kingdom and Epcot too. InsyaAllah, next time!

God does not lie and His promises are sure. Three things will happen to you this coming week, Insha'Allah:
(1) You will find favour with someone you don't expect;
(2) You will be too relevant to be ignored;
(3) You will encounter God and you will never remain the same again.

Aku, demam, dan kantor..
Hari ni genap seminggu aku tidak ke kantor. Bukan sengaja, tapi aku sarat demam.. hari ni baru ada baiknya sedikit. Alhamdulillah, syukur aku panjatkan pada Ilahi.. selalunya aku jarang demam, namun jika demam, makaan ia lambat sungguh reda-nya.. Trimas pada teman2 yg sudi hulurkan bantuan, ada yg datang memasak, dan meng-antarin makanan segala.. hanya Tuhan yg mampu membalas jasa baik kalian.. aku rasa terharu, kerana tinggal jauh dari keluarga, namun teman2 yg baik ini umpama saudara kandung sendiri.. pantas saja bilamana menghulurkan bantuan.. Teman serumah ku jua byk membantuku..dialah yg masak utk ku ketika mula2 demam kelmarin, dan dialah juga yg byk nolong ketika aku jatuh pengsan di luar sadar. Aku sndiri nggak menyangka jadi begitu, nyaris2 aja aku diantarin ke rumah sakit. Aku takut skali tinggal di hospital!
itu dulu bicaranya utk kali ini.. aku harus solat ya.. nnt ketemu lagi.

The Spark of New Knowledge
Today I attended a Doctoral Forum organized by the Student Learning Center of the University. Its central theme was around the issue of originality, and few sharing sessions with some of the panel experts from the exam committee, and recent graduates who won the best thesis award.
Well, according to one of the speakers, "originality is hard to define". There is always a problem when it comes to define whether certain work being carried out is really original. Dr Barry mentioned that somehow our work is a kind of replication. We replicated unintentionally. Yes, I agree with that very much. Our research is usually based on work that previous people have done, and we might investigate the same thing but from different perspective or perhaps applying different methodology for measuring something. He also stressed that, its okay to have negative results or outcomes from the experiments. It simply because the negative outcomes can also be something very valuable. So do not perceive negative results as a failure.
He also said that its important to ensure our work is something publishable. One of things that examiners like to ask is the value of our research work. In other words, what are the significant contribution or outcomes we had discovered or found from the studies.
To recall back the advice given by the panel of experts from the exam committee, Assoc Prof Mavis Haigh stressed that what she really expect from a thesis or dissertation is the "clarity of arguments". She said that "do not let the examiners struggle try to understand the arguments in the thesis". Thus, I presume this is very important piece of advice I received and learned today, that it is very very critical to make sure that we organized the whole idea of the thesis. My head started to thinking the action that should be taken before engage into writing up a thesis. The whole story of the thesis must be clear enough, thus providing linking in between of chapters is significantly important. Put the story all together in a coherent manner. She mentioned many times that the "organization of ideas" is very very important. The examiner would like to see the whole thing of the thesis like a story that have a clear background and purpose, and that the author has presented critical analysis of what have been done before. Prof Ross adding by mentioning that the studies should open up a new questions for future exploration. That is really interesting. It reflects back to my experiment in the previous semester where the results we obtained did not support the projected alternative hypotheses. It was quite sad, but when I rationalized back the whole thing, I understand the possibility of some intervening factors that might somehow have rather greater influence as compared with the factor we're investigating. So, the first experiment rather than giving only the results, at the same time, it open up a few more useful aspects for future investigation, which is indeed sound interesting to the researcher :-)
Well, those are the things I captured from the sessions. There was also a discussion about turning a thesis into books. The speaker are editors from recognized publisher in NZ. They mentioned that if you're interested in producing a book from the thesis, make sure we clear about who will be the "audience". The audience is the target reader of our book. So that once we clear about that, we can be sure of the use of style, the structure, and expectation of knowlegde of the author. Its always important to talk or communicate with the publisher at the early stage (It can be as simple as just sending them an email! mentioning your intention and possibility of publication) It doesnt need you to prepare the whole lot of thing because if they;re interested then only you will know what is the expectation, and the target submission of manuscript, and everything will be detailed in a contract. Writing a book is more into engaging into finding who will read your book when it get published? Therefore you really need to know your market!
Hmm at this point of time, I personally haven't given serious thought about it. Maklumlah..Phd pun lum abis.. but it;s really a good thing for promotion or recognition purposes. But I think at this stage, first things first. Get this Phd done first, and later when you got your title in front of your name you perhaps will consider an opportunity for writing a book! InsyaAllaah.

"Oh yes he doesn't need that title anyway"
It does not matter, really. He has fan all over the world, including me :-)
From the first time I saw this guy singing that "Mad World" song, I can see that he is really different than any other contestant, he is unique, very unique. To me he is a real rare and is amazingly truly performer with a very beautiful voice. I personally feel he deserves to win the contest because he definitely a classi in his own league. Oh yes despite of that sexual issues that people have been talking over the net, its his choice, the point is, like Simon Cowell said, he really can sing, not only can sing very well with that great vocal range, but really an entertainer!he's soooo talented, I can;t wait to see him on tour to NZ.. ahh.. no point to feel sad about the results.. hahaa..

2nd Year Anniversary (21st May 2007-21st May 2009)
Owh that's not about wedding anniversary - it's just a reminder to me that I've been in Auckland exactly two years on today. So, now I'm stepping into the final stage of this PhD, can I believe it, oh yes please. Man... Time really flies!
I'm scared now I've got so much things to do..erggh. Shouldn't complaint ya I knew that. I am just getting tired and bored doing with this experiment thingy. I can't wait for the semester to end so that I can relax on Saturday and doing things I liked. I am anxious though looking forward to meet my real good friend - kak Lili who will be coming to Auckland next Wednesday. I really can't wait to see you kak lili, there r lots of things to catch up with you :-)

Musim Perletakan Jawatan
Hari ni kecoh dlm inbox mail pasal orang2 yang dilantik menerajui Mapsa sibuk nak letak jawatan (orang2 tu termasuklah aku!!) ISH..memanglah..rase nak pelangkung je sapa yang gatal undi aku.. Bukan apa, memang bagus ada persatuan, tapi bab2 siapa nak pegang jawatan,walaupun dibuat secara undian, kenalah ikut sukati tuan punye badan..pegang jawatan ni kena sukarela, bukan paksa-rela.. lain lah utk misi2 kritikal contohnya mcm menerajui negara atau yg sewaktu dengannya. So, berbalik kpd cerita letak2 jawatan tadi, sebenarnya dan seeloknya kasilah peluang kpd kami2 yang senior ni utk menumpukan perhatian pada pelajaran..maklumlah tak lama lagi nak masuk finl year (adoi seramnya!!!) maka sedar2lah diri tu.. so, mmg patutlah dan sesssuaailah bagi yg junior pulak pegang jawatan mapsa tu.. sedangkan dlm agama pun takde paksaan, apatah lagi ni pulak dalam persatuan yg tak seberapa mcm.. (erm paham2 la). Simpati jugak kat presiden baru, dok sibuk nak pulun provisional dah kena suruh buat meeting cepat2.. sabarlah ye tuan presiden baru! Ape2pun, pada pendapat saya, tak payahlah kecoh2 sgt psl persatuan ni, sbb tujuan dtg sini pun nak belajar..hal2 lain yg tak berkenaan tu boleh letak ke tepi dulu, hidup ni kena ada priority!

Waitangi dan kisah kucing purple
Hari ni cuti umum di NZ sempena Hari Waitangi. Tapi mcm biasa lah, bile ada kerja penting nak kena siapkan, mmg berkobar2 semangat nak pegi ofis. Lagi satu yg syok tu, time cuti ni aman sket dok kat ofis, boleh lah fokus lebih sket konon...hek! Sbnrnya pagi tadi ada jumpa kucing kaler purple, tapi jumpa dalam mimpi da... yg kelakar tuh, kucing tu pemalu bagai nak rak..nak suruh kuar umah, punyer la malu...segan tak tentu pasal..sbnrnya kucing tu tak wujud pun di alam nyata, taktau la mana dtg tetiba muncul dlm mimpi! Disebabkan kucing tu slow bangat, aku pun sergah dia kuat2, terus dia melompat punyer la kuat, smpai terjatuh terperosok kat bawah tangga, tetiba aku rase bersalah gile! tapi nak tergelak pun ada.. tetiba aku terus terjaga dari tido sbb sedih dan tak sampai hati tgk kucing tu mcm kesakitan..aduh kesiannya dia.. mana la aku nak cari kucing purple tu sbb nak kena mintak maaf kat dia la.. huhuu

Cerita ceriti hari ni
About the things today, I managed to do at least one good thing: preparing & distributing goodies (small tit-bits) to bribe the students in the class :) Hey it’s not bribe actually! I consider it as a token of appreciation for their effort & time they spent on answering the questionnaire. So its just representing a THANK YOU from me. That is all. Whether they do deserve it or not, that’s a different story! Well, at least I can see some happy faces today :-)
The only thing that makes me feel so pissed of was the incident of this one guy (actually the demonstrator) of the course when he said something which I thought quite rude. He said something like this “You;re doing PhD rite? I thought that you’re a PhD student, so I supposed you should know how to solve it. Then, why do you call me?” He said that to me when I called and asked him to give some helps to a student who was debugging his code. Well, apparently I was very surprised with his statement, but I managed to control myself. So I was not yelling back at him as that was not my style or my way of answering when someone is acting very rude to me. I wish I could say something like this: “It’s not that I don’t know how to solve it, it’s because you’re paid to do it, so it is your job! You’re rite, of course I am much smarter than you that’s why I am here doing my PhD and I didn’t wasting my time doing unnecessary thing!”. Haha.. belagak sungguh! But fair enough, aye? Well, that’s simply isn’t me. I was actually felt ashamed at that time because I noticed few students were looking at us when he said that to me. Well, I have to take care of my pride too, so I nicely answered him back saying that actually I was not into the question from the beginning, and as a course demonstrator he should know better (I was actually busy on something else so I was not ready to spend time to debug codes for a student who is on his last-minute-doing assignment!). Back to the story, of course as a normal human being, don’t you feel like giving him some “penyepak” on his face or in malay we said something like this “ish nak kena penampar apa budak nih....!” hahaa… no, of course I’m not going to do that. I truly don’t blame him for his weaknesses and his intolerance or impoliteness when communicating to other people. Well, I believe he doesn’t really understand what doing PhD is all about. Some people are so naïve and think straight that for instance if you are a PhD student in CS then you must be really damn good in programming. Well, it is not necessarily be the case. It depends on the area of research that you do. Ah there are a few more stories, but I guess cukuplah utk hari ini.. dah malam dah ni..nak kena tido da…
Morale of the story: “kalau dah memang tu keje ko, buat aje lah.. toksah nak byk songeh”.
